The King or Giant Protea (Protea cynaroides)
The King Protea is one of South Africa’s most spectacular flowers and a true natural treasure. It is found in many parts of South Africa and usually blooms from spring through to autumn, lighting up the landscape with its bold colours and giant flower heads. In fact, it is the largest protea species in the world, which is why it’s called the King Protea.
The name Protea comes from Proteus, a god from ancient Greek mythology who could change his shape whenever he wanted. This is a perfect name, because proteas come in many different shapes, sizes, and colours—no two types look exactly the same. Some are spiky, some are round, and others look like they belong in a fantasy world!
The protea is more than just a beautiful flower. It is also a symbol of strength, pride, and achievement, and is widely used in sport, especially in South Africa. Just like the protea survives tough conditions and still grows strong, it reminds people to be resilient, adaptable, and proud of who they are.
