The Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis)
The Springbok is one of South Africa’s most famous and loved animals. You can find this fast and graceful antelope in almost every National Park across the country, from wide open grasslands to dry, sandy areas. It is perfectly adapted to life in the wild and is always alert and ready to move.
A fully grown Springbok stands about 72 to 80 cm tall at the shoulder. Even though it isn’t very tall, it is incredibly quick and athletic. Springboks are famous for their amazing jumps, called pronking, where they leap high into the air with stiff legs—almost like they’re showing off their strength and energy! In the wild, a Springbok usually lives for about 10 years.
In Scouting, the Springbok is a powerful symbol of achievement. It represents growth, effort, and reaching goals through hard work and determination. Just like the Springbok is always ready to leap forward, Scouts are encouraged to keep moving ahead, challenge themselves, and do their best.
