1st Graaff-Reinet Scout Group

School holidays have arrived. Parents are scratching their heads, wondering how to keep energetic sons busy with something constructive. Scoutmasters? Well… we get bored too. 😄
So naturally, the solution involved an axe, some recycled tins, a bit of wire, open fire, and a healthy dose of Scouting spirit.

On Tuesday morning, Troop Scouter Jacques rounded up a keen group of Scouts — proudly kitted out in their purple shirts and scarves — for a hands‑on lesson in one of Scouting’s classics: the legendary billy‑can.

Each Scout arrived armed with a few tins, wire, and some basic tools. Under Jacques’ watchful eye, they got stuck in crafting their own conservation stoves. There’s something deeply satisfying about turning “junk” into something useful — especially fire‑powered usefulness!

Between the inevitable burst of games (because what’s Scouts without a bit of chaos?), the Patrols foraged responsibly for twigs and grass from the surrounding area. With fires lit and stoves assembled, it was time for the real test: cooking.

And let’s be honest — you can never go wrong with instant noodles.
Hot, hearty, and well‑earned, the ramen disappeared in record time. 🔥🍜

The day wasn’t just fun and food, though. The Scouts also completed their axemanship requirements, learning the safe and correct use of knives, axes, and other blades. Respect for tools, safety awareness, and responsibility were the order of the day — vital Scout skills that last a lifetime.

By the end of the morning there were tired legs, smoky scarves, big smiles, and that unmistakable feeling of “we built this ourselves”.

Well done to Jacques and the Scouts for turning a quiet holiday morning into a proper Scouting adventure.

🟣 Regular Scout meetings resume next Thursday with the start of the new school term,
18:00 at the Chookie Geard Scout Hall.

Same time. Same place.
More adventures to come. ⚜️
