“Scouting shouldn’t have to stop because it’s school holidays,” said Chris to Jacques, the Troop Scouter. “Let’s plan something lekker for the boys next weekend.”
And so, on Saturday, 4 October 2025, in the blazing Karoo sun, seven Scouts and two adult leaders gathered at 8 am at the Chookie Geard Scout Hall, ready for action. The day promised to be a scorcher, but these Scouts weren’t fazed. Hats on, water bottles filled, and spirits high – they were geared up for an adventure that would test their skills and their grit.
With a troop full of fresh faces and eager learners, this was the perfect chance to sharpen campcraft skills. The Scouts got stuck into knot work and pioneering, building a mock campsite that looked straight out of a survival manual. But it wasn’t just about tying ropes and pitching shelters – Chris kept the brains buzzing with questions and explanations: Why do we build fires this way? What’s the point of waste management? Every task came with a lesson, and every lesson built confidence.
The Patrol Leaders also stepped up, learning the ropes of leadership – from managing their teams to making decisions under pressure. These aren’t just skills for the campsite; they’re skills for life.
One big twist? Phones were allowed! Scouts snapped pics and shot videos to share on the troop’s new social media channels. The results? Pure gold – action shots of knots, shelters, and proud faces showing off their handiwork.
Of course, mistakes happened. A few wobbly lashings, a tent that was not pitched – but that’s the beauty of Scouting. You learn, you laugh, and you level up. These mini-adventures are the stepping stones to top-notch camping standards, and the troop is ready for the challenge.
After four solid hours of sweat and construction, it was time for a break. And what better way to refuel than with a proper South African braai? Boerie sizzling, Scouts chilling – this was the taste of teamwork.
A special thank you to the parents who popped in during the day. The Scouts loved showing off their handiwork, and the leaders were thrilled to have parents involved. Your support makes these adventures even more meaningful!
With bellies full and photos snapped, it was all hands on deck to pack up. The mission? Finish in time to catch the Springboks take on Argentina. Spoiler alert: the Bokkie didn’t disappoint!
The verdict? A massive success. To the Scouts who missed out – don’t stress. This was just the beginning. More adventures are coming, and they’re going to be bigger, better, and even more epic.
